So you are sitting at work or maybe in a waiting room waiting for your car’s oil to be changed.  You really wish you were on your boat instead.  Since you are not on your boat, why not take this opportunity to pull out your mobile device or log onto your computer and take a look at some cool boating videos.  Here is a collection of what I think are some pretty exciting boating videos that you may enjoy.

 Okay, so maybe this is the reason why I don’t own a sailboat.  Imagine having your boat tied up to the dock and out of the blue, mother nature chooses it to release some electrical tension.  Maybe it has something to do with that 40 foot lightning rod in the middle!

 If you have ever had trouble trying to trailer your boat, maybe this will make you feel better.  After all, these guys are supposed to be professionals, right?

 Have you ever felt like you were being followed?  This guy did and he was right.  The scary part is that he was in kayak a long way from shore and his stalker was a big hammerhead shark!!

 This one is quite disturbing but it highlights the fact that paying attention while at the helm is of utmost importance.  Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in this incident.

Superfast Canoe

 The words canoe and fast are typically not used together in the same sentence.  In this case they are.  This is what happens when someone gets bored and decides to try something new.  Imagine strapping a turbo diesel engine to the back of a long canoe and taking it out for a ride.  Oh, wait . . . you don’t have to imagine it.  Here it is, big rig sound, rolling black smoke and all.

Apache Powerboat Owning the Waves

 This is an older video and the quality is not as good as you may be used to but it still gets me excited every time I watch it.  This Apache 41 power boat is catching some serious air as it runs across the huge waves.  It is a must watch.

 If you struggle to get your boat into the slip, these guys are gonna make you look bad.  Heck even if you don’t find it that difficult, these guys will still probably make you look bad.  The most exciting boat docking competition there is.  Yes, take a close look.  One of the contestants looks like he is only about 15.

The Cahaba Incident

 This is not a video but actually a series of photos taken from a bridge of an incident that occurred in 1979.  A towboat pushing two barges down the flooding Tombigbee river in Alabama gets caught on a bridge and is eventually rolled under the bridge.  It eventually pops up on the other side, rights itself and the captain and crew are actually able to restart the vessel.  Talk about needing a new pair of pants!!

 If you are familiar with tournament fishing, you probably know that there is a time deadline to get your catch back to the dock.  Watch as this captain wastes no time in getting his boat to the dock on time.

 These two captains have some serious gonads!  Some people say that I am a bit crazy because I enjoy a little rough water while boating every now and then but this is definitely to the extreme!   Check it out.

Maintenance on you boat is important.   We all know that.   Sometimes, we don’t know all of the items that we need to take care of though.   Even a non-boater can tell you that you need to change the oil, but do they know about impellers or outdrives?   Here are some important maintenance items that are commonly ignored on boats, what they do and why you should pay attention to them. Impellers What they do:   They are responsible for drawing water into the engine’s cooling system to keep the engine operating within proper temperature range.   Depending on your boat’s propulsion system, they can be located in the outdrive, on the front of the engine or in a separate housing.   Maintenance:   They should be replaced every two years.   If you use your boat extensively, you may need to replace them every year.   Don’t forget that if your boat has a generator, it will have an impeller also. Do It Yourself - Fixing a Shower Sump on Your Boat

Several months ago, I noticed the shower drain in my boat was not removing water as it should. Rather than water running down the drain, it just collected in the pan at the bottom of the shower. Recently, I decided to tackle the job and figure out what was going on. I knew I was going to spend the entire July 4 th weekend on the boat and I wanted to be able to take a shower without worrying about the water building up. If you are not familiar with the workings of a basic shower sump system on a boat, it is actually pretty simple. The drain at the bottom of the shower empties into a box down in the bilge. Since the box is most likely below water level, there is a pump in the box that pumps the water up, out and overboard. Often the pump has a float switch attached to it to cycle the pump on when the water gets to a certain level and off when the box it empty.
